ON TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN

Hello There!
Welcome to Travel Thursday!

A few years back, maybe about 8 years ago, my best friend Bonnie and I took a trip to the mountains of North Carolina.  Our trip plan included a visit with my sister Anne and family (they live out in the country).
painting a mural for my niece Amy and a trip to Cheap Joe's in Boone. We took a day trip to the Biltmore House and a drive up Doggett Mountain where we lived once upon a time.

This is the story of Doggett Mountain.

My brother and I were starting our Senior year of  high school, a VERY large high school in a large city when my parents made the decision to move to North Carolina.  Not only did they move us City Slicker kids to the middle of nowhere, we were stuck on the top of a mountain out in the country in the middle of no-where on a FARM.

The nearest town was down the curvy mountainside into the valley and the only thing there was the school. Another 20 or so miles into the mountains was a town that looked like it was from another century, seriously.  But back to the school....Kindergarten through High school all in one long hallway.  Did I mention that we had come from a VERY large high school population in the hundreds, multi-level building with a maze of hallways to a single hallway school house that housed K-12?  The Senior class had 24 students, that included my brother and myself.  It was shocking.  I couldn't believe I was there in the middle of no-where.

Not only were we "out in the country" we found they spoke a totally different language which I could barely hear due to altitude and where alien words were spoken like  'maters, taters, pokes....what on earth was a poke?? When asking directions we were told "it's about as fer as ye kin spit times 10"; or "its a fer piece up thar road".  WHAT???   We were seriously in culture shock and definitely "not in Kansas any more".  The only saving grace was the beauty that surrounded us.  We moved in the first week of October and the fall leaves were beginning to change, lighting the mountains on fire so brilliant and saturated with color it took my breath away.  As my Granny would say "it's beauty is beyond words".  If it weren't for that fact I'd have packed my bags and headed back to Florida.

We were from Florida (flat-landers) and there was much to learn from the country folks in "them thar hills".  I learned what real neighbors were like (helpful and kind), that there were poor people that lived in one room shacks with lots of little children and those who had the least were the ones who gave the most.  There was love for God, family, for each other and everyone was friendly and helpful. Lessons were not only in the single hallway of the schoolhouse but were learned from the land and farming it, the people who loved it.  Even though I was a miserable teenager stuck there on that mountain, I did come to love and appreciate the people, the community and land.

I learned to love the mountains through the fall days, and into the winter when the fields were covered in frost and the mountain streams and waterfalls would freeze over and the way the sun would glisten off the ice. The clean smell of mountain air, the cold stillness at night, the soft sound of snow falling and the beauty of the forest being covered in a blanket of pure white.  My heart longed to paint what I was seeing but I didn't have those skills, still I longed for paint and brush to capture the beauty of the seasons.  And although I was quite unhappy being stuck on the top of a mountain, that is where my love of nature really began.....on top of  Doggett Mountain.

I'd not been back to Doggett Mountain since leaving it in 1973 until my friend and I visited in the spring of 2007. Thirty-four years had passed, things had changed. The schoolhouse was still there and what remained were the fond memories of the people and the beauty of the land, the serenity of the mountain.

Oh and now I have my paints and brushes and I know just what to do with them!

Happily painting memories!

Week 2 Attitude of Gratitude

Hi Everyone!

Thanks for stopping by! Today I'm sharing my Attitude of Gratitude Journal pages with you. You can see the entire post by clicking on the above tab marked Attitude of Gratitude Journal.

You might remember in the last few posts about my journals that I have been trying to make a dent into my supplies by using up what I have instead of purchasing new stuff?  Well, I had a little breakdown the other day, a moment of weakness when I was online checking out a "tutorial" and went over to the link to Ranger Ink http://rangerink.com/ . Oh MY Goodness! I should have closed that page right away but being curious about some of the products and watching the "demos", I got sucked right in.  Not a bad thing mind you but a rather expensive one. Here's how I justified the purchase to myself: I've been out of work for the last few years and have had limited income to purchase supplies. My husband said I should spend some of the money on something I liked.  So....art supplies here we come! LOL! Well it's a good rationalization until I get the bill. Here's what I got: Spray inks by Dylusions in Squeezed Orange, Fresh Lime and Vibrant Turquoise. Don't you just love those names? For some time now I've wanted to try Claudine Hellmuth's Studio Paints http://claudinehellmuth.blogspot.com/: Modern Red, Altered Orange, Dab of Yellow, Classic Teal and Landscape Green. Can you see the color scheme going here?  Yes, I ordered those too! My biggest splurge was the Inkssentials Non-Stick Craft Sheet http://rangerink.com/?product=non-stick-craft-sheet%E2%84%A2; it is just the greatest thing! Have you seen them? Do you use one?  They resist every medium you can put on them and they are heat resistant too! LOVE LOVE LOVE!!!  If you don't have one, put it on your Christmas list!
Supplies
I'm so excited to have these products to work with and you will see them incorporated in the next journal pages.

Thanks for stopping in today and I look forward to sharing more journal pages with you next week!

Li'l Journal Project Week 4

Hi Everyone!

During Week 4 of the Li'l Journal Project we were asked to make a Job Time Line, do some mapping with a twist, make a diagram of our social network, remember a trip or vacation and look at magazines subscriptions.

It was a very exciting week for me, some of the prompts we were given had me digging deep and realizing I've have a blessed life. My attitude of gratitude is renewed for the many gifts I've been given.
Here's what I learned:

  • God is the director of my social network
  • Blessed to be a Wife, Mom & Grandmom
  • I have a Adventurer's Heart and an Artist Soul
  • Love to travel, but Home is where this heart resides.
  • Love magazines

You'll get the scoop with each page if you click on the Page Tab above marked Li'l Journal Project.  Here's a Sneak Peak of my favorite prompt:

Ashley is taking a week's break with the journal prompts so this is a great time to play catch up on your pages or jump in and start a Li'l Journal Project of your very own! You can check it out by clicking on the link below.  I hope you will consider joining (let me know if you do!) and I promise you will have so much fun!

Routine and Change

Hello There!
It is Thursday already, this week seems to be going by in a hurry for some reason.  I always feel the first three months of the new year go by quickly, or maybe that is how long it takes me to remember to write the correct year! LOL.  Can't tell you how many times I've written 2011 this past month!
I've been thinking about how as we age we become more like our parents, following certain routines each day. Now, don't roll your eyes because believe me, one day you will be just like this! That's a guarantee.  It's not all bad, really.  I was wondering about routines and if it is only noticeable as we get older or if maybe we have been doing this all along? When we were children it was just what we did everyday, when we became parents, we put our babies on a "schedule" and later in the workforce, it became the "daily grind", now that we are older, it is called "routine". Let's face it, everyone has a routine whether you choose to call it that or not, that is what it is. Maybe the difference is where you are in the age process. How flexible you are in your daily habits?
Whatever, it is still routine, call it what you may. I kinda like it (routine) because I know what I need to do next.  Of course there are variations to the routine from time to time along with the interruptions. Interruptions are dreaded by some, like the plague, or they can be bright moments that bring joy to your day (week, month or year)!  It is called CHANGE, ewwwhhh, I know, that little six letter word strikes fear into the heart of many and brings delight to others. Some people fear change, others embrace it; I'm guessing that it depends on what change it brings to your life.  Maybe change comes to break the monotony of routine!  As an older person, change can be difficult to work into a routine, but it is important as we age to stay open to change.
I hope to be able to embrace changes when they come into my life, whether they are good or difficult and to see the lesson in each one. Hopefully, to learn what is necessary to grow spiritually, to count my blessings each time.  To "live and learn", I've heard that all my life and that is what change is about, learning life's lessons and whether or not you get it the first time around or need remedial lessons to remember what to do or not to do in the future.  So routine isn't a bad thing and neither is change, it just depends on how you take it and what you do with it. I'm wondering how many people would take routine over change if given a choice?
Have a wonderful week and enjoy your routines, embrace changes and count your blessings!
